Such great food!!!! I've been coming to sunset beach for over 30 years.... but not for the food. The area is beautiful but very lacking in anything good or interesting, that isn't seafood.
My husband, best friend, and I, stumbled into this place on a whim and kid free night. We weren't expecting much, and man were we wrong! It was amazing! The food was super fresh and fast and the wait staff and bartender could not have been more accommodating. Oh..... and the PINEAPPLE Sauce! Trust me, you need this in your life. I can't explain how this is the most amazing thing that has ever come out of a squeeze bottle... but you will crave it for months!
I so hope this place is still there when we come back next year, as it will be our first stop, after the beach.... or possibly before ha

The wife and I just returned from dinner , and  got to say, muy bueno!

To quote both Bart Simpson and Etta James, "At Carumba" and "At Last"!

I read other reviews and spoke with neighbors and decided to it was time to check this place out myself.

The verdict: reasonable drink prices,  huge wings and delicious hot good sized portions (I'm pushing 300- not proud about it, just sayin') and I had no qualms with the portions.

It's a clean, well lighted place (literary allusion left to you) with good service and food to match.  When it's time for you to chow down south of the border, it's time to head south of Calabash: you won't be sorry.

Update from last review: "downhill we go"

Turn on the AC!!! It's middle of summer and they are running only ceiling fans. Makes you feel disgusting eating while sweating in here.

This place took a major backslide on us this evening. Salsa was runny and was mainly tomato liquid. Ordered mixed nachos. Huge glob of sour cream and sadly I learned the cheese was shredded mozzarella melted. Had to ask for queso to pour over it. It didn't taste good and was just a huge mess. Typically nachos would be covered in melted white American mixed with diced green chillies and jalapenos diced and juices. Idk what they are doing with mozzarella.

Wife had quesadilla. The menu price is wrong, you'll get charged 50 cents more. Not a deal breaker just wrong. The deal breaker is my wife stated the cheese again with her steak was mozzarella. WTF?! My aunt is first generation American from Mexico with successful restaurants out west. This place lost its authenticity with me.  Idk if something changed with chefs or if they had to go with cheaper options to  stay open. Guessing they are taking cheaper short cuts and letting quality take a back seat.

Decor is still sad and depressing like the ghost of restaurants pasts.

We desperately wanted this place to be awesome.
    Sadly, it isn't.

The chips are thick and dark from being over fried. They also lack salt. The salsa is bland and basically glorified tomato sauce with chunks.

The cheese dip is fine and typical, but a small dish cost $4.75.

The Mexican shrimp cocktail did have 8 good-sized shrimp. The shrimp are deveined. Good! To make this better, add more than a few small pieces of avocado and cut the shrimp into bite-sized pieces. Add crisp radish cubes for an extra zing; although not a part of a typical Mexican cocktail, it's done in several excellent restaurants. The sauce is bland tomato sauce (probably from a jar). The cocktail cost $15.99, which is high. It could be worth the cost with the plethora of fresh large-sized shrimp in the area, so please consider some flavor improvements.

The chicken burrito was fine, but the chicken was dry and bland.

The flautas were okay but dark, over fried, and greasy.

Overall, if you have a mild palate and want bland food, this is the place for you. Be aware though, this place may not survive unless they price their food well. My guess is if they lower their prices, they'll get more regular, local customers. They could be the Mexican version of Gravy's restaurant nearby. If they keep the high prices, they need to update the ambiance from a tacky Chinese and Mexican mix and not use dollar store utensils that have already rusted (such as my fork). High prices also mean food with a complexity of flavors and outstanding quality.

I rarely post something this negative, but I guess I was just that disappointed. All four of us were disappointed. If the owners read this review, I'm sorry because I want you to succeed. Seriously, contact me, and I'll give detailed feedback for free that may help. Y'all could use a Gordon Ramsey makeover.

Stopped here on a whim.  SO GLAD I did.  Ordered enchiladas - beef with red sauce and chicken with green sauce. The tortillas and both sauces were extremely flavorful. The green sauce was amazing and the red sauce had a wonderful spicy heat.
